My wife Jennifer was instrumental in shaping the look and feel of our store, taking on the role of interior decorator with flair. Every aspect of our store, from the walls and trim, to the tables, and graphics, had to earn her seal of approval before making its debut in Dig Dig.

Our customers have fallen in love with our color scheme. Frankly, so have I—to the extent that I decided to turn my upstairs office into a Dig Dig store. In fact, it is complete with graphics, toys and curtains – matching (flyway) blue walls and (warm stone) trim and doors. When I revealed my plan to Jennifer, she just said “You know, we might have to sell this house one day?”
When we started talking about the impact this decision would have on the home, I learned something about trim; It doesn’t stop! Don’t ask me to delve into this mystery of trim. But, suffice to say, Jennifer has made a compelling case that our current cabinets and countertops need to be replaced to match the new closet trim. Maybe she has a future sales position with Dig Dig.
I thought the upcoming Saturday morning would be just like any other. Jennifer woke up, hit the gym while I caught a few extra z’s. But suddenly, I was catapulted out of bed by Jennifer’s rousing pep talk and a road map. Five, emphasis on FIVE, countertop emporiums from the East to the Northwest side. And all of them closed at noon. There went my lazy morning!
I naïvely assumed picking out a countertop was akin to picking out socks. Traversing through these huge warehouses, I was introduced to Quartz, Quartzite and granite. These endless huge slabs of rock were meticulously lined up – ever so carefully, leaning toward each other like a giant tower of playing cards. Row after row – in no particular order, you followed the one-way arrows to serpentine through maze of polished rock. Funny, there are more couples in a countertop warehouse than at a marriage event. As we passed in the aisles, the guys all seem to make subtle eye contact. And in that moment, they have a complete understanding of each other’s situation.

We were trying to find that perfect “rock” to center your food-preparation life around. Every other countertop we passed seemed to be a good choice to make my bologna sandwich on. But in Jennifer’s world, a card-carrying member of the Tan club, everything is “too white, too gray, too dark, too bland.” I started to realize the weight of picking out the perfect countertop was turning into a decision she was not taking lightly. She certainly did not put this much effort into picking her color-blind husband; a disability I now count as a blessing. Funny how all the warehouses have yellow construction helmets for customers to wear. A policy, I realized, that must have been there solely for a husband’s protection.
Then, as if by divine intervention, we met Heather, the countertop guru. She spoke granite like a second language. She guided Jennifer, likening granite to pieces of the Earth itself—unique, unpredictable, and requiring a certain acceptance of its natural beauty. “Think of it like art,” she mused, a comparison that struck a chord with Jennifer. “You don’t just choose art; you fall in love with it over time. It grows on you, revealing its depths and nuances.” Then, with a playful twinkle in her eye, Heather added, “Like your husband, honey. Consider how long it took for you to truly fall in love with him?”
This comparison, light-hearted yet laden with truth, brought a smile to Jennifer’s face. Consequently, it was the moment the granite slab in front of her transformed from just another countertop option into a canvas of natural artistry she could fall in love with.

How did we end up here from an upstairs office remodel, you ask? Well, it’s a funny journey from home renovation to the playful world of Dig Dig. Along the way, we discovered unexpected joys and challenges. On your next visit, I invite you to revel in the construction-themed decor, each corner a testament to my wife Jennifer’s love and meticulous attention. Therefore, it’s the perfect backdrop for capturing those adorable moments of your little builders.
