Hello there! I’m Billy Lomax, owner of Dig Dig. For forty years I was a Trucking manager. Then what were my primary responsibilities? Interviewing. Hiring the right people and training them. However, in my book, hiring the most qualified didn’t mean choosing the most educated or experienced candidate. Instead, it was about finding individuals with the right characteristics—those ready to commit and give their best effort over the long haul.
Firstly, hats off to the real MVPs of the trucking world: the drivers, dock workers, office support and supervisors. These folks keep our world running by braving snowstorms, traffic jams and poison inhalation spills! Just take a look around you. Everything you see was brought to you by a Truck off a concrete platform. Of course, finding people that fit in this, or any other tough environment, is not an easy task. And truth be told, it’s getting harder.
With over 10,000 interviews under my belt, I’ve learned the best insights come from stories, not rehearsed answers. So, if you want to know about a person’s work ethic or resiliency, skip the “What are your strengths?” and ginstead, ask “Tell me about a time you thought you couldn’t finish your route.” You’ll learn quickly who has the self-confidence and grit to get it done.
For those of you gearing up for interviews or eyeing that next big promotion, here’s some Lomax wisdom: bring your past victories to life. Don’t just tell me you’re reliable—show me. Give me that gripping tale of how you worked a double shift or finished that project just in time. Paint a picture so vivid that I’m right there in the passenger seat, gripping the door handle.
Such vivid story telling doesn’t just showcase your reliability. It also reflects your self-confidence. And that’s crucial, not just for acing interviews but for tackling any challenge in life. It’s that inner spark that turns tough situations into triumphs. When you can articulate your achievements confidently, you not only convey your true potential as an employee.
