Every great idea starts with a little mess, and in our case, it was a room. After building out Dig Dig, we found ourselves with an extra room that had become a sloppy storage spot, a catch-all for inventory. Originally, the plan was to use it for an RC zone where kids could drive mini construction equipment on a tiny construction site. Cool idea, right? Well, turns out, not so much—it was better suited for older kids (8-14 years old). However, since our sweet spot is ages 2-10, it just didn’t feel right.
So, with that idea shelved, I started thinking about how to make the most of the space. Since sand is now my thing, I wanted to get serious about it. That’s when I met Jerry Burgess, aka The Sand Man, a retired geologist from Salt Lake City, UT. Jerry knows more about sand than most people know about their phones. A 1974 Rutgers graduate, he spent decades studying sand in the lab and running Jurassic Sand—a company that sells premium sensory sand to therapists and families across the country. His special sand is Jurassic Sand, a red fine sand found somewhere in UT. (He won’t tell me). This guy even turned living rooms into makeshift sandboxes for birthday parties!
Jerry’s stories and expertise inspired me to develop something really cool —a SensorySand PlayRoom where kids can explore and build with sand in ways you’ve never seen before. The idea isn’t just to play with sand but to give kids a workstation where creativity meets construction. We designed our tables with quality wood and metal—no flimsy plastic here—and included graphics to guide play and spark ideas. As a result, kids will have everything they need to dive into imaginative, hands-on learning.
Then came the really fun part: figuring out how to create perfect sand molds. After hours of research and testing, we developed molds with just the right angles, ridges, and nubs for a frustration-free experience. And then, enter the Figgie Sets—our custom molds that let kids create all sorts of construction vehicles by arranging them in different ways. It’s not just fun; it helps kids develop motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and creative thinking. In other words, it’s an engaging activity that combines play with valuable learning experiences.
