I have a confession to make: I am not exactly what you’d call “business savvy.” But somehow — somehow — Dig Dig was born. And not only born… it’s growing. The truth is, I don’t believe I built this alone. I’ve had help–Divine help. Every time I’ve needed something (or someone), the right person seems to show up, as if sent on cue. Let me explain the magic behind Dig Dig.
I remember the day we had to unload 3,250 bags of sand. And no, I did not have a plan. I was driving to the store with my good friend David, who casually asked, “So, what’s the plan for unloading all that sand?”
Great question, David.
David is an engineer — the kind who solves problems you didn’t know you had. In the 40-minute car ride, he came up with a method that made unloading not only faster, but safer. He basically created the sandbag version of a Chick-fil-A drive-thru. Therefore, no one had to walk on loose sand and no one slipped. It was glorious.

Then there’s Vanessa.
Vanessa started as an office clerk when we worked together at Holland Trucking. She is organized, smart, and has this ability to figure out complex systems like websites and point-of-sale platforms. Consequently, all the stuff that gives me heartburn. She not only keeps our reservation system things running smoothly, but she also reminds me what the passwords are.
And then came Phil.
I was looking for someone who could help create files for custom dinosaur molds — you know, like a normal Thursday. That’s when I found Phil. He’s a rare breed: part eccentric inventor, part carpenter, part artist. If there’s a weird idea, Phil can probably build it, sketch it, and make it cooler than it has any right to be. And since all I do with my time now is think of obsurd ideas, Phil has become one of my best friends.

And of course — Billy.
Back in my Holland Trucking days, Billy was my welder. I used to see him out there welding dock plates, sparks flying, and — how do I say this — just a whole lotta butt crack. At first glance, I had no idea that behind that plumber’s peek was the best metal fabricator in the business.

But as time went on, I learned that Billy didn’t just weld for the docks — he built race cars. Yes, really– actual race cars. In fact, I even met Al Unser Jr. in his shop, which, to be honest, totally blew my mind. Billy helped fabricate the SandMaster — a serious piece of sandbox equipment that’s part toy and part engineering marvel.
See the theme?
I’m not the genius behind all this. I’m just the guy God keeps plopping into the right place, with the right people, at the right time. That’s the real magic behind Dig Dig — not me, but the incredible talent that God has placed in my life. From engineers to artists to fabricators to tech whizzes, every step of this journey has been made possible by the right person showing up just when I needed them most. It’s humbling, a little funny, and kind of miraculous.
And while all of these amazing people are the magic behind Dig Dig, there’s one person who has made all this possible.
Jennifer.
My wife, my partner. my polar opposite.
She’s neat, I’m messy.
She’s a planner, I wing it.
She watches musicals, I watch the NFL.
On our second date I handed her my checkbook and said, “There’s somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000 in there.” (We’ve been married for 32 years and I’ve haven’t opened a bank statement since.) She’s not the magic behind Dig Dig — she’s the magic behind my life.
A few years ago, for Christmas, I tried to put all of this into words. My daughter Victoria (the artistic one in my life) drew a picture of our home and below it I wrote her a poem — a funny one, but true at its core. It was a simple way to say, “I see you. I appreciate you. I know I couldn’t do this without you.” And so, to end this blog, I want to share that poem — a little tribute to the magic that makes our house, our marriage, and this whole business work.
The Magic House
This house is the most amazing place!
Whatever you use, it will instantly replace!
Year after year, things magically appear.
Don’t go to the store, just look in the drawer.
Shirts, socks, underwear and even my jeans,
Are all pressed and folded — this house even cleans.
Bathroom supplies are kept on the shelf,
This house replaces them all by itself.
And when it comes to something to eat,
This house’s magic makes life really sweet.
Always in stock is the fridge and the freezer.
I feel like a king — like Julius Caesar!
Now I know that this story isn’t really true,
All of these things — a house cannot do.
If it weren’t for the one that is close to my heart,
My life and this house would soon fall apart.
Jennifer — I love you for coming into my life.
