The Recipe- A Love Story (Sort Of)

Sunday mornings are kind of our thing. We start with church at 9:00, hug a few necks, and head straight to Walmart—still early enough to beat the crowds. It’s our little routine: worship, fellowship, and a peaceful glide through the aisles before the shopping cart traffic arrives.

We have a system for these trips. And it’s borderline Olympic. Jennifer starts in the back at dairy, then serpentines her way through every aisle—finishing triumphantly in produce. My job? I follow with the cart and keep the Backtrack Tally. Every time she has to double back an aisle, it’s a point deduction. A perfect score is zero. And Jennifer usually crushes it. But today? Minus 13.

That’s a lot of U-turns. The culprit? This wasn’t a normal grocery run—it was New Recipe Day. Jennifer had found something new she wanted to try—one of those bold, hopeful experiments that would either be quietly forgotten… or earn a spot in her recipe box. But not just any recipe box. I’m talking about the legendary, meticulously typed, laminated-card system she designed herself—organized into 13 color-coded categories. In other words, getting a dish into that box is no small achievement. That’s a treasured place.

Suddenly, we were hunting down ingredients I couldn’t pronounce, let alone locate. I stopped for one second to open the Walmart app, looked up… and she was gone. Just the faint echo of church heels on tile.

Jennifer always dives into these culinary experiments with hope and love.
Later that evening, she plated up the new dish and handed me a fork. Then came the question: “Well… what do you think?”

It’s not as stressful as a dressing room reveal—but it’s close. Because in that moment, I know my next words determine the rest of the evening. Maybe the week.

That’s when my role shifts from scorekeeper to truth-teller. Because honesty is important in a marriage—even if it means being gently resented until Tuesday.

This time, though?
The dish was a winner.
Like, actual recipe-box-worthy. It had flavor, texture, and not one hint of regret.

And as I sat there with an empty plate and a happy wife, I couldn’t help but think—this is what love looks like. A little bit of planning, a lot of heart, and the willingness to try something new, even if it means wandering the aisles of two grocery stores in church clothes.

It reminded me a lot of Dig Dig.

We didn’t know exactly how it would come together—we just knew what we wanted it to feel like. So we gathered what we believed in: vibrant colors, clean sand, handmade toys, friendly people, faith, and a price tag that made families feel welcome. We stirred it all together with time, prayer, and a hundred “what if we…” moments.

It wasn’t fast. It wasn’t perfect. But it was made with love.
And now, just like that recipe, it’s something we love to share.
